Mao Zedong Essay
1. A) According to source A, Mao Zedong along with the Party Central Committee were able to efficiently construct a socialist system in China, within a very short period of time. Mao and the PCC were able to analyze the economy of China and develop a system called the Great Leap Forward, which would fix the problems that they had discovered. That system quickly transformed China into a self-sufficient country, which were able to function under a socialist system. B) Source D displays Chairman Mao with his many supporters at a massive rally, where he had condemned the bourgeois intellectuals. Mao is shown sitting down with a very straight and serious face, along with his many supporters with their fists up. This photo shows Maoââ¬â¢s supreme command over people and his serious demeanor while ruling over people as well as talking about the bourgeois class. 2. Source B shows Mao Zedongââ¬â¢s beliefs about his rapid socialization, which is very successful. Mao shows anger and rage in his speech towards party members who wanted the progress of China to be slow down because he believed his movement was becoming increasingly successful. Source E on the other hand, displays Maoââ¬â¢s policies in an alternate manner. The author explains that the Chinese economy was hurt by Maoââ¬â¢s attempts to rapidly industrialize it. He stated that the economy did not stabilize until Mao took a break from politics. When Mao returned to the realm of politics again, he introduced a policy that would transform Chinese society. These policies would offset the progress that was made during Maoââ¬â¢s political absence and would also introduce more problems and strife into society. Source B shows approval towards Maoââ¬â¢s attempts to swiftly change society however; source E shows the damaging effects for China nationally. 3. Source A is a newspaper article, which talks about judgments on Maoââ¬â¢s political policies. The authorââ¬â¢s intent on writing the article was to persuade people that Maoââ¬â¢s policies transformed China into a powerful and self-sufficient socialist nation. While Mao was in power, he imposed heavy censorship of the Chinese media. The author had to please Chairman Mao, so this made it very difficult to portray his actual points. Therefore, the article is most likely biased and cannot present an accurate primary source account of Mao Zedong. However, the article can be utilized as an example of Maoââ¬â¢s censorship of media during his time of rule. Source C is a brief rant that a university student wrote and published on a wall poster at a Qinghua University. The rant was written in order to persuade Chinese people that corrupt leaders like Chairman Mao are taking advantage of them. The author also seems to be calling his audience to take action and overthrow Chairman Mao. He supports this notion by saying that the people gave Mao power in China, and the people can also easily take it all back. The rant is full of emotion, with no factual evidence towards his claims, which takes away from the validity of this document. This piece doesnââ¬â¢t contain an abundance of data or facts, but it does give the reader a true account of the rage and anger many bourgeois intellectuals felt during Maoââ¬â¢s rule. The value in this source is that it establishes the true feelings of oppression towards the bourgeois class by a communist dictator. 4. Between 1953 and 1964, Mao transformed China into a socialist nation. In actuality, China displayed characteristics of a single party state led by Mao Zedong. Source D displays a picture of a massive rally led by Mao, and his followers raised their hand in passion against the bourgeois intellectuals. The people were very proud of their government and proud to be on Maoââ¬â¢s side, as seen by all their hands in the air. It is striking however, that Mao is sitting there without his fist in the air and the same conviction as his followers. Chairman Mao has all the power in his hands although it looks as if the people commonly share the power. The proletariat class would have power in a true socialistic government however; Mao controls the people of China under his iron fist. Source A is a newspaper article that respects and acknowledges the Great Leap Forward as a step in the right direction for the Chinese economy. In actuality, Maoââ¬â¢s Great Leap Forward was a failure. The production levels increased in factories, but at a detrimental cost to the Chinese population. Many farmers lost their lives through the collectivization plan, which took more grain away from the people and handed it to the government. Source A shows a controlled positive image of Maoââ¬â¢s success with transforming the economy, so the people can become brainwashed to believe that Mao is helping the Chinese people, when he is actually killing them. Maoââ¬â¢s clever use of Cult of Personality allowed him to create this untruthful positive divine image of himself and thus source A was written to conform to Maoââ¬â¢s image and also so this person would not be accused as a counter-revolutionary. The third source, Source C, displays the outright control Mao had over the bourgeois intellectual class. A student offers his opinion on the oppressive ways of Chairman Mao. His rant shows rage towards Maoââ¬â¢s political system, which is corrupt. It also provides a heartfelt account of true emotion about what citizens actually think about Mao Zedong and not a censored image of Chairman Mao. Sources A and C both display characteristics of a single party dictator instead of a socialist government. Mao controls all aspects of Chinese life and makes all the decisions; unlike in true socialism where the proletariats are given the rights to chose the structure of government. He transformed Chinese people into a single-minded inferior race that blindly follows the leader. Socialism on the other hand provides the absolute opposite, where people can think for themselves, but more importantly the people make decisions and work towards the goal of a better country.
Of Mice and men, Analysing weak characters Essay
The novel is called ââ¬ËOf mice & menââ¬â¢ because things can go wrong between a small mouse to an important human being. Thing can go wrong despite how hard you try. There are two characters in this novel that I think are portrayed as being weak. One of the characters that I feel comes across as weak in the novel is Crooks. The reason being is because of how he is treated by the other characters in this novel. For example, most of the characters except for Slim refer to Crooks as a ââ¬ËNiggerââ¬â¢. Even though ââ¬ËNiggerââ¬â¢ is a racist term, it was used normally in those days. But this shows the little respect the rest of the characters had for Crooks; they could have decided to refer to him using his real name, just like Slim. The fact that they continuously call him that shows the weakness in Crook, if he had the amount of free will and power the rest had, he would have spoke up and tell them to stop calling him a ââ¬ËNiggerââ¬â¢. Steinbeck may have set it out like this to show that not everyone was racist and disrespectful to whom the majority of the people thought was inferior. Slim could have been a character just like Steinbeck, heââ¬â¢s showing that he is not racist and is empathetic to Crookââ¬â¢s feelings, and is aware that despite his skin colour, he is just as superior. However, noticing this, Slim could be portrayed as weak because he didnââ¬â¢t speak up to defend Crooks when it came to the name calling, if he did, he probably would have been casted as a ââ¬ËSell outââ¬â¢ by the other characters. There is another incident in the novel that shows how inferior and weak Crooks is portrayed. After Curleyââ¬â¢s wife enters the room to talk to him, Lennie and Candy, Crookââ¬â¢s ends up getting frustrated with Curleyââ¬â¢s wife and starts telling her off. However, by now the readers would have thought that Crookââ¬â¢s is finally standing up for himself and defending himself, but this all changes in the space of a few minutes. For example, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife retaliates and sayââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËListen, Nigger, you know what I can do to you if you open your trap?ââ¬â¢ ââ¬ËWell, keep your place Nigger. I could get you strung up on a tree so easily it ainââ¬â¢t even funnyââ¬â¢. ââ¬ËStrung up on a treeââ¬â¢ meant to be lynched; this shows that she had the power to get Crooks lynched, even for the pettiest things. So even though Crooks was speaking the truth, him speaking up could get him into trouble, he canââ¬â¢t win, him staying quiet and saying the things the other characters wants to hear makes him look weak, but even when he does speak up against problems, he is still portrayed as weak. After Curleyââ¬â¢s wife mentions this, the narration says ââ¬ËCrooks seemed to grow smallerââ¬â¢ the use of the letters ââ¬ËErââ¬â¢ shows that he was already ââ¬Ësmallââ¬â¢ but by Curleyââ¬â¢s wife mentioning Lynching, it made him ââ¬Ësmallerââ¬â¢, weaker than he already is. One more factor that shows Crooks is weak, is by the structure of the chapter, the chapter starts and ends the same. On page 99, it sayââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËCrooks sat on his bunk [â⬠¦] he held a bottle of liniment and with the other hand, rubbed his spineââ¬â¢. The chapter also ends the same way. This shows that the way Crooks is living is never ending, itââ¬â¢s a cyclical feature, and there is no hope for him. Also, because Steinbeck kept on referring to his spine, shows that even though Crooks does have hopes and dreams, him being black and being injured is whatââ¬â¢s stopping him from living the ââ¬ËAmerican dreamââ¬â¢. The injury to Crooks back occurred after being kicked in the spine by a horse. The reason for this is because of where Crooks Is forced to sleep. Crooks sleeps in a barn. This is usually a place where horses rest. On page 98, it lets the readers know the Crooks bun was made form a long box filled with straw. ââ¬ËCrooksââ¬â¢ bunk was a long box filled with strawââ¬â¢. This portrays him to be some sort of animal. He is portrayed as a horse. Again even though horses are strong physically, they are weak in the sense that they have no power, they are usually tied up. This is a good example of Crooks. Again, he may be the most intelligent out of the characters and in some ways, mentally strong. But he is still weak in other ways. Another character that Steinbeck portrays as being weak is Curleyââ¬â¢s wife. The apostrophe in ââ¬ËCurleyââ¬â¢sââ¬â¢ is possessive, this shows that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife belongs to Curley and that he is her owner. She is referred to as ââ¬ËCurleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢ throughout the novel and is not named. It also shows how unimportant she is and how little the characters think of her. Another way she is portrayed as weak is by her attitude towards the men in the novel. Curley doesnââ¬â¢t pay her much attention, so she feels insecure and lonely. This makes her want the attention of the other men and makes her feel superior and important, even though she isnââ¬â¢t. The characters talk about her in a negative way behind her back. For example, after Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is introduced George sayââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËJesus, what a trampââ¬â¢. The use of the word ââ¬ËJesusââ¬â¢ makes Georges reaction the Curleyââ¬â¢s wife seem dramatic, this shows that Curleyâ⠬â¢s wife is a huge problem if she causes such dramatic responses. Also he refers to her as a tramp. ââ¬ËTrampââ¬â¢ can mean many things, but one definition of a tramp for a female is a prostitute or a person regarded as promiscuous. This is Georges first impressions Of Curleyââ¬â¢s Wife, and this is how she comes across whilst trying to flirt. This shows how weak she is to George especially. She may be trying to flirt and act sexy in order for the men to lust after her but her trying has no effect on George, he thinks of her as the opposite. George also calls her a ââ¬Ëbitchââ¬â¢ and a ââ¬ËRat trapââ¬â¢ whilst talking to Lennie. A ââ¬Ëbitchââ¬â¢ is the name given for a female dog, this links to the apostrophe in ââ¬ËCurleyââ¬â¢s wifeââ¬â¢ Dogs are popular pets and have owners. She is like Curleyââ¬â¢s pet. Curleyââ¬â¢s wife thinks of Crooks, Lennie and Candy as the ââ¬ËWeak onesââ¬â¢ by her saying this, it makes her look weak as well, she feels she has to refer to them as something deemed inferior in order to make her feel superior. However, even though she refers to them as this, she still hangs around them, this showââ¬â¢s that she hasnââ¬â¢t got much choice and that that is the only form of company she has and appreciates, despite coming across as nasty. This shows her weak side. In section 5, Curleyââ¬â¢s wife goes in the barn to comfort Lennie and flirt with him, this could have led into something more. If she didnââ¬â¢t end up dying she probably would have ended up sleeping with Lennie. This again, shows her weakness; she is not strong enough to just leave Curley if she is not happy, she married Curley for the wrong reasons, leading to her being unhappy. Instead she goes behind his back looking for ââ¬ËLoveââ¬â¢, ââ¬Ëcomfortââ¬â¢ and a sense of ââ¬Ëimportanceââ¬â¢. This leads to her being accidently killed by Lennie. Before this happens whilst she confides in Lennie she admits, ââ¬ËHe says he was gonna put me in the moviesââ¬â¢ referring to one of the actors she met. This didnââ¬â¢t end up happening so she ended up marrying Curley. She then goes on and says ââ¬ËSo I married Curley. [â⬠¦] I donââ¬â¢t like Curley, he ainââ¬â¢t a nice fellaââ¬â¢. This shows that she had no choice but to marry him and that she is finding it hard to escape from him. The death of Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is like Karma. She threatened to get Crooks lynched if he carried on disrespecting her but then ended up dying as a result of her neck of being broken, this is what lynching is. Also, she married Curley for the wrong reasons and used him and she was also the women who stopped the characters from living their dreams, this may have been out of spite from her not getting to live hers. However, again, she ended up dying, and the characters still didnââ¬â¢t get to live their dream. This is how Karma works, ââ¬Ëwhat goes around comes aroundââ¬â¢. This could be linked to the ââ¬ËCyclical featureââ¬â¢ in the novel, the problems are never ending and there is just no hope. To conclude, both Crooks and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife are very much alike and theyââ¬â¢re just as weak as each other. Both characters are referred to as harsh names other than their real names. They both had dreams of being successful but it never happened. Crooks is a black man, and Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is a white women. So even though Crooks had dreams and was capable of getting far the only problem that would have been stopping him is the fact that he is black and racism was in full effect in those days. Also, he was the smartest among the other characters, this links back to the title ââ¬ËOf mice and menââ¬â¢ that things can go wrong despite how hard you try. So despite his intelligence and how hard he learns, he still canââ¬â¢t get to where he wants to go in life. Nevertheless, even though Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is white, she is a woman. Women didnââ¬â¢t have that much say or rights when men were involved. So her dreams and goals were not reached. For example she sayââ¬â¢s ââ¬ËI never got that letter, I always thought my olââ¬â¢ lady stole itââ¬â¢ She is adamant that her mum stole the letter an actor ââ¬Ëwroteââ¬â¢ to her, so thatââ¬â¢s why she never became an actress. Except, going back to how powerful men were in those days, White American men especially, he may have not even written a letter, probably forgetting about her and just complimenting her because it was the heat of the moment type. This shows that Curleyââ¬â¢s wife is not mentally strong enough to come to terms and face reality of what actually might have happened, again thatââ¬â¢s her way of feeling important, because deep down she is a weak individual.
